Captain Jonathan A. Hayes graduated from Tufts University and received his commission, through ROTC, as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force in June 1964. As the only one in his ROTC class to be accepted for flight school, Captain Hayes entered Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) in January 1965 and received his silver wings a year later. He went on to advanced flight training and qualified in the F-4 Phantom II in the fall of 1966. Between 1967 and the Fall of 1972 he served three tours in Southeast Asia participating in Operations Linebacker and Rolling Thunder among others. During this period, he distinguished himself by flying 356 combat sorties and earning five Distinguished Flying Crosses, including one with “Combat V” for heroism, as well as twenty-two Air Medals. Between and after his tours in Southeast Asia, he served as an F-4 Instructor Pilot (IP) and Flight Commander assignments both Stateside and in the UK and Europe. Captain Hayes left active duty in 1976 to pursue graduate work in business at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College where he graduated with an MBA in 1978. His subsequent civilian career was highlighted by receiving the challenging designation of Certified Financial Analyst before retiring as Managing Director of the Washington State Development Authority. Throughout his civilian career, Jon has remained a staunch advocate and supporter of our Military and the Air Force in particular. He has been a member, among others, of The Distinguished Flying Cross Society, The Red River Rats, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) as well as mentoring AFROTC cadets at neighboring Oregon State University.
