CWO4 William C. Gilbert, Cincinnati, Ohio, served in the United States Army as a helicopter pilot for over 20 years, flying first Hueys, then Blackhawks. In addition to other service medals, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1969, for heroism displayed while supporting a Special Forces reconnaissance mission in Vietnam. His commendation states that his "quick reaction and unfaltering determination was instrumental in the saving of four fellow aviators." He retired from the Kentucky National Guard in 1995. He also served as a Cincinnati Firefighter for 25 years; built and flew his own ultra-light aircraft; was a talented handyman and automotive mechanic; and could tell a great joke. CWO4 Gilbert passed away from cancer on September 8, 1998. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, and two sons and their families.
