    Born in Manitowoc, WI in 1943, Dan graduated from UCLA, served in the US Navy, and worked at Hughes Aircraft Company's Space and Communications Group. He earned his Private Single Engine Land certificate at Santa Monica Airport (SMO) in 1978, and went on to earn certificates and ratings for Commercial, Instrument Airplane, Flight Instructor, Ground Instructor, and Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane.
    He accumulated over 2500 hours of flight time, including single and multiengine land, and glider. Dan also experienced the joy of flight in EAA's B-17 Aluminum Overcast, a hot air balloon, enjoyed aerobatic flying, and jumped out of a perfectly good airplane (with a parachute). In his spare time, Dan was a contestant on Jeopardy, winning a salmon fishing trip to Alaska which included a flight in a de Havilland Beaver. He loved cross country flying, completing numerous trips up and down the East and West Coasts. He shared his extensive knowledge, skills, and love of flight with numerous students at Leesburg, Virginia Executive Airport (JYO).
