Dave completed a 5-1/2 year tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps on January 15, 1970. He flew F-8 Crusaders including 200 combat missions in Vietnam.

On March 13, 1970 he went to work for Delta air Lines. Aircraft flown included the CV-880, DC-8, DC-9, B727, B767-200-300ER-400, and the B777-200IGW. He retired on January 1, 2003 with over 22,500 hours of flight time.
