David Ward arrived on Ascension Island from Saint Helena for duty at NASA’s satellite tracking station in 1976. Ascension is part of the Eastern Test Range. It is in a very strategic location for launches from Capt Canaveral, Florida, as well as for supporting NASA’s other earth orbiting satellites. Considered a hardship duty assignment, with no frills, workers lived in World War II barracks on a leased Air Force Base under British rule. In 1978 David left his telecommunications position on Ascension, returning to England and undertaking a new and successful career.
