    Derek Gardner was born in Liverpool, England. He began his long and happy working career as an aeronautical engineer in 1941 helping draft the Whitney Bomber. After service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, He joined Bristol Aircraft Company, LTD. In 1955 he was recruited by Lockheed Aircraft Company in the United States with whom he stayed until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure he worked on a variety of projects:

    1955: Skunk Works, Burbank, CA
    1958: Moved to Sunnyvale, CA 1959: F94-BD
    1968-1971: Rift, Discoverer, Agena, Voyager, And Mimosa Lunar Space Exploration
    1971: YO - 3A Quiet Airplane
    1972: MSDA
    1977: Introduced to CADAM which he loved.
    1982: Space Station Freedom 1987: ACRV
    1992: Retirement

    He loved almost everything that flew with a special love for the Spitfire. He was especially proud to have worked on Space Station Freedom.

    This is dedicated in his memory by his five children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren with much love.
