    Donald Ernest Martin was born on April 7, 1913, in Enola, Pennsylvania, and earned his private pilot's license in 1931. From 1931 to 1933, Mr. Martin flew a variety of biplanes from manufacturers including American Eagle, Challenger, Curtis, Taylorcraft, and Waco. He participated in air races and air shows across the Northeastern United States.

    In 1933, Mr. Martin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with Squadron SS-1M in Quantico, Virginia, flying the Curtis Jenny. He also served with Aircraft One, Fleet Marine Force, VO-9M in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, flying the Vought Corsair SU-2.

    Mr. Martin's distinguished civil service career at Middletown Air Depot, Pennsylvania, spanned 30 years across a range of technical and leadership positions, including Electrical Department Foreman, Maintenance Department Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent for Propellers, Link Trainers, Missiles, and Superchargers.
