Donald G. Hays entered the United States Air Force Aviation Cadet program in May 1949. He took his basic training at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, and his advanced training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. His first assignment was with the 81st Fighter-Interceptor Group, 91st Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, located at Larson Air Force Base, Washington. It was here that he was checked out in the North American Aviation F-86A Sabre Jet. A year later he was reassigned to the 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing in Korea where he was attached to the 336th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron. He completed twenty-seven missions before returning to the United States. He was released from active duty in August 1953, as a result of President Eisenhower's reduction-in-force program following the end of the Korean hostilities.
