Dr Alexander Victor Lyman was a lieutenant in the Army Air Force in France, 1917 and 1918. He left Princeton after his sophomore year in 1916 before the United States entered the war and served in the French Ambulance Service.

He was transferred to the Army and flew a Spad in the 27th Aero Squadron. He was credited with one kill. After the war he returned home with the fabric side, a propeller blade, and instruments from his plane. They still exist today. He was a physician and practiced medicine until his death in 1959.
