The U.S. Air Force has established the Francis X. "Duke" Kane award given to the outstanding Space Development Planner each year. Dr. Kane was an innovator of space systems in the early years of our national space program. He was an early advocate of what is now called the Global Positioning System, Manned Maneuvering Space Vehicles, and advanced surveillance from space. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Astronautics for his efforts for Space Rescue, and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has published over 50 papers on space and technology. He is co-author of the book, "The Strategy of Technology."
