Dr. Jain-Ming (James) Wu was an educator and researcher. He received
both his M. S. and Ph. D. degrees from the California Institute of Technology
Caltech) majoring in Aeronautics:
Dr. Wu derived the first equation for the thrust vector control of rockets m
1960 His interest spanned from propulsion, orbital mechanics, aerodynamics and fluid mechanics. His major contribution was in transonic flows, viscous flows, and unsteady flows. He published many articles in technical conferences and journals, including the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Aeronautics) Journals and the Journal of Fluid Mechanics (British), and others.
Dr. Wu was the first B. H. Geothert Professor at the University of Tennessee Space Institute where he taught for 31 years. He directed many masters and doctoral students during his long and distinguished career.
Dr. Wu was active in international scientific activities. He; was visiting professor at the von Karman Institute at Belgium in 1970. He also lectured often in Germany, Japan, China and Taiwan. He was Honorary Professor at several foreign universities.
Dr. Wu is married to Dr. Ying-Chu Lin (Susan) Wu. They have three children, Ernest Han-Ping, Albert Han-Tsing and Karen Han-Whea Wu.
