Honored by:

John A. Wise, PhD, CPE
Pilot Certificate 1884414, C-ASMEL-I CFIA

B.A. Experimental Psychology, University of Dayton, 1966; PhD, Information Science, University of Pittsburgh, 1977.

Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, John always had a love of aviation. He made his first solo in 1964 at Dayton's Cox Municipal Airport. After graduating from the University of Dayton he joined the Air Force where he made his first supersonic flight on 8 April 1968. He graduated from pilot training at Moody AFB, GA in Class 69-02. He was assigned to be a T-38 advance jet instructor pilot and was stationed at Webb AFB, TX. After leaving the Air Force he attended the University of Pittsburgh where he received his PhD in information science. During his tenure in graduate school he gave flight instruction on weekends to supplement the family's income.

Dr. Wise began his career in human factors engineering at the McDonnell-Douglas Corp where helped design the cockpit of the F/A-18. He participated in many evaluations of the interface design using high-end dome simulators capable of air-to-air missions. He also participated in the flight test program at Naval Air Station Patuxent River.

He joined Westinghouse R&D Center where he worked on a number of projects involving the display and interpretation of airborne radar and infrared imagery. He spent 13 years at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he led human factors research teams addressing piloting, cockpit design, pilot training, air traffic control, and maintenance. He was an active participant in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley AGATE and SATS program. While at the university he was funded by a number of foreign aviation agencies (e.g., Eurocontrol, Direction de la Navigation Aerienne) to look at the effects of automation in air traffic control and ways to certify devices from a human factors engineering perspective. He is currently a research scientist at Honeywell where he is charged to do research that will support the development of advanced avionic systems.

Dr Wise has been an adjunct faculty member of the French National Civil Aviation University (Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile), in Toulouse, France.

Dr. Wise has been a member of several flying clubs using light aircraft for pleasure flights and taking his family on long-duration vacations.

He is married to Nancy M. (Kayko) Wise (originally from New Brighton, PA). They have two children: Mark A. Wise, PhD, and Suzanne A. Wise.

Dr. Wise has published over 100 technical papers and eight books on aviation related topics including:
- Wise, J.A. & V.D. Hopkin (Eds). (2000). "Human Factors in Certification." Hillsdale, NJ:
Lawrence Erlbaum.
