    Wall of Honor Level:
    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:

I had major roles in various aspects of the U.S. Air Force Space Research from 1957.
This started with the design and operation of rocket payloads for studying the upper atmosphere. The results were used to develop improved models of the upper atmosphere. A unique project was the tracking of Soviet and U.S.A. satellites. This stared with the first Soviet Sputnik which was launched in October 1957.
This was followed with the design of a number of instruments which were flown on satellites during the period 1961 to 1983. The measurements included atmosphere density, and composition and solar radiation. I designed three small satellites which were flown in 1968 and 1971. The first U.S. Standard Atmosphere was published by the Air Force in 1959. This model was not very accurate, and it was updated in 1962, 1966, and 1976 using more extensive rocket and satellite data.
In parallel with this work, COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) developed International Reference Atmospheres starting in 1961 and updated in 1965, 1972, and 1986. I was Chairman of the Commission which directed the development of these later models. More of my research continued and was published until 1995.
