    While working as a manual laborer, Robert qualified for and completed the civilian pilot training program in 1941. He accepted a commission as U.S. Navy ensign in 1942 and was trained to be a flight instructor. He was assigned to NAS Bunker Hill where he rose to the rank of lieutenant and taught until the end of the war.
    Robert became an optometrist, then resumed activity in aviation as a flight instructor. He was appointed to the West Virginia Aeronautics Commission by the Governor and was instrumental in the development of aviation in Marshall County, West Virginia. He retired from active service in 1990.
