Edmond G. Young, age 84,
retired chemist and science
consultant, and longtime resi¬
dent of Mickleton, NJ, died on
April 19, 2002 at his home.
He was an active member of
Evangelical United Methodist
Church in Clarksboro for over
60 years. He served ns Chair¬
man of the Administrative
Board for many years, ns a
Sunday School Superintendent
and on numerous committees.
In 1954, he was one of the
founding members of the East
Greenwich Township Zoning
Board of Adjustment, which he
served as Chairman of the
Board for 18 vears.
Mr. Young was born in Gov¬
ans, MD. He graduated from
Baltimore City College and the
University of Maryland. In
1943, he obtained a PhD. in
Organic Chemistry from the U
of MD. In 1944, he began his
tenure with DuPont nt Jackson
Lab where he conducted
research in the use of freon for
aerosol propellants. His 38
year career with DuPont cul¬
minated in 1982 with his posi¬
tion as Manager of Business
Development in the Central
Research and Development
Department in Wilmington,
DE. Until his death, he was
Director with the Delaware
Valley Chapter of National
Defense Industry Association
and former Director of th?©
Philadelphia Chapter of the
National Security Industrial
Association. In addition, he
was an invited lecturer at the
United States Naval Academy,
the Naval War College and the
Senior Executive Education
Program of NASA.
Following retirement from
DuPont, he consulted with
NASA and the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, CA,
where he contributed to the
microgravity researchin space.
From late-198« until mid-
1998. Dr. Young was a consult¬
ant to the Research Office of
the University of Delaware at
Newark.
He was a member of the
American Chemical Society,
the American Association for
the Advancement of Science,
the Commercial Development
Association, the Association for
the U.S. Army and the Air
Force z\ssociation. He belonged
to Sigma Xi. Phi Kappa Phi.
Alpha Chi Sigma and Theta
Chi. Among the many awards
he received, the one he held
most highly was the Silver
Medal for Outstanding Service
from the American Defense
Preparedness Association
He and his wife, Jean, trav¬
eled extensively, visiting forty
countries on six continents, He
was a supportive member of
Colonial Williamsburg, which
he visited semi-annually. As an
electric railroad enthusiast, he
maintained memberships in
six trolley museums from
Maine to California. In addi¬
tion, he was a philatelist with a
special interest in the stamps
of Scandinavian countries.
Surviving are, his wife of 65
years, the former Jenn Auwetter; Iris children, Rev. Stephen
Edmond (and wife. Susan) of
Franktown, VA, Janet Russell,
MD (and husband B. Dale) of
Scottsdale, AZ and Timothy
Alanat home;granddaughters,
Emily & Sally Russell; also
brother. Louis L. of Ln Junta.
CO; and brother-in-law, Jack
Auwetter of Mickleton
The Rev. Gary l\irk, Pastor
of the Evangelical United
Methodist Church will officiate
at the funeral service at
11:00am. Thursday. April 25,
2002, in the church at 14
Cohawkin Road, Clarksboro.
Friends may call Thursday
after 10:00am in the church.
