Edward Daniel McCarthy was born March 2, 1922 as the fourth child of Cornelius and Catherine McCarthy of Plainfield, New Jersey.

Edward (Chip) McCarthy graduated from North Plainfield High School, and he attended Rutgers before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943.

Chip became part of the 513th Squadron, 376th Heavy Bomb Group in the Mediterranean. He was a navigator and flew 50 missions, including the second strike at Ploesti, Regensburg and other places. Those flying from England only had to fly 25 missions before coming back to the US. Chip was in the Mediterranean and flew 50 missions. He flew a B-24 named My Aching Back. After his time in Europe in the Army Air Corps 1943-1944, and after 50 missions, he was returned to an Army base in Charleston SC, where he flew more missions. He was part of a small group that did a quick mission to NY to pick up a mystery package and deliver it to New Mexico the following day. Years later learned it was part of the Atomic bomb that they transported to New Mexico.

Chip married Mary Gloria Burrell McCarthy RN, of New Jersey. They were married during wartime on October 31, 1943 in El Paso, Texas during a 5:00 Catholic mass. They had seven children and 25 grandchildren in the following years. His longest career was with Metropolitan Life Insurance company (over 35 years.) Retired in 1982 and immediately started Multistate licensing company for assisting stock brokers in passing their insurance licensing exams. Chip completed his college education at Queens College, NYC in 1974 with a degree in Philosophy.

Anyone that knew him loved him; he was a great, honest man of integrity. He loved his family and was a fun to be with. He had a wonderful sense of humor and the gift of story telling. Each time he told a story, the story grew a bit with exaggeration which lended itself to the new version. He was a skilled management executive and taught anyone willing to listen, constant learner, and strong supporter of education.

As with many WWll veterans he rarely ever talked of the war until much later in his life. It was then it became emotional to recall so much of the stress that was put on men in their early twenties.

He had a very good life. After a very short illness, he past away January 8, 2010, just shy of his 89th birthday. He is buried in, So Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.
