    Edward T. Phillips directed and managed design, development, and manufacture of the Surveyor spacecraft lunar landing control radar, used in the first soft touchdown on the moon by a space vehicle. This achievement established the basic design for the Apollo manned lunar module landing control radar.

    As Chief of Engineering Design for the Ryan Aeronautical Company's Electronics Division, Phillips was also responsible for navigation, guidance, and altimeter radar equipment used by fixed wing, vertical take-off and helicopter aircraft for the Navy, Army, and Air Force.
