Edwin Burnes was a private pilot following his service in the U. S. Army in World War II. One of his earliest memories is of listening to a shortwave radio broadcast of the Lindbergh landing in Paris through a hand-held earphone held by his father. He has been interested in aviation since age 3.

He is a retired psychiatrist whose lifelong avocation was building model airplanes.
