Elmer worked for thirty-one years as an engineer in the flight test division of North American-Rockwell. He analyzed data from flight tests and helped develop new instruments and equipment. He spent a great deal of his time in Palmdale, CA and at Edwards Air Force Base, CA working with test pilots such as Chuck Yeager. Although much of what he did was classified, he was occasionally recognized for his contributions to the development of aeronautics.
