Daryl received his Navy Wings of Gold on February 6, 1945 following 22 months of intense training. He carrier qualified on the Great Lakes in an F6F Hellcat and night carrier qualified on the USS Ranger.

He embarked on 2 anti-submarine patrols on the Macassar Straits from the west coast to Hawaii and was assigned to an Essex-class carrier for the invasion of Japan (following rocketry training at the Salton Sea). VJ-Day occurred the day before he was to ship out.

He extended his enlistment to join Ferry Command and maintained his enthusiasm for aviation for a lifetime.
