    After completing pilot training at Lubbock, Texas in January 1944, Robert P. Breitenbach flew 51 missions with B-17 Squadron 773, 463rd Bomb Group flying out of Celone Airfield, Italy with the Fifteenth Air Force. He survived the bombing of the heavily defended Ploesti oil fields in 1944. This was considered one of the major targets for the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II.
