Honored by:

Flight Officer Barry Winston Wood, August 25,1948 - November 4,1998

Barry was introduced to aviation at an early age. His Dad was a pilot, then station manager for Eastern Airlines employed by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, and Barry had the great pleasure of meeting him.

The year of 1969-1970 Barry proudly served his country as a pilot in the 1st Air Cavalry Company A, 227th Air Helicopter Battalion in Viet Nam.

April 1971 Barry became one of the first Baltimore Police helicopter pilots. On November 4, 1998 tragedy hit when he was responding to a call from his fellow officers. The Schweizer 300 c engine exploded. Barry maneuvered the helicopter to avoid endangering the citizens and the police in the area. He turned the helicopter so he took the impact of the crash and saved the life of his partner.

The Baltimore Police Department has dedicated a new Eurocopter EC-120 in remembrance of Barry.

Flight Officer Barry Winston Wood, a true hero & great man. The memory of Barry is too precious to be forgotten. I lost a wonderful husband and soul mate.

Mrs. Martha G. Wood
