    George F. Medcalf joined the United States Army Air Force in 1943, graduating from basic training at Hicks Field in Texas where he flew BT-19s.He then trained at fields in Fort Worth and Lubbock, Texas and Oklahoma, and Kansas – where he flew various planes, including AT-11s and A-7s as the 1st pilot. Eventually he became the Co-pilot of a B-17. He was transferred to the Second Air Force and was to be sent overseas when the war ended. He separated from the Air Corps in 1945 with the rank of Flight Officer.
