    Franklin Payne proudly served in the USAF from 1957 to 1977. He started out as an aircraft mechanic until he became a flight engineer in 1967. He devoted service in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Airmen's Medal by President Johnson for pulling a downed pilot to safety from a burning aircraft in May 1966. He served as a flight engineer for President Nixon's travel detail. After retiring from the USAF, he entered the commercial aviation field as an aircraft mechanic for Piedmont Airlines which became USAir. He worked there until he passed away in 1998
