    Born in the Panama Canal Zone 22 August 1921 into a military family. Father was a General in the Medical Corps, US Army.

    In 1945 he graduated from West Point Military Adacemy with a degree in Science and Engineering. After graduation he chose the Army Air Corps and spent 28 years actively flying fighter aircraft.

    Attended the National War College class of 1966. Received Masters Degree in International Relations from George Washington University 1966.

    CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
    - Had four combat tours - two in Korea and two in Vietnam.
    - During combat in Korea he flew 67 missions in the P-51, 35 in the F-80 and 121 in the F-86.
    - Flying the F-86 he shot down 9 Mig-15s and one LA-9 aircraft, probably destroyed another Mig-15, and damaged 3 Mig-15s. He was in the 334th Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group.
    - Was the leading jet ace when he returned to the US in 1952, currently ranks number 6.
    - In the World Wide Air Force Fighter Weapons Meet in 1955, flying an F-86, he won all six trophies offered for individual performance. That feat has never been equaled.
    - He wrote a tactics manual "NO GUTS, NO GLORY' in 1955 that was used in the Air Force for 25 years.
    - In Vietnam flew 157 missions in the F-4, 108 of them over North Vietnam. He was instrumental in the fight to have guns put back on our fighter aircraft.
    - Received a total of 36 different decorations during his 30 years service. Most notable - Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Distinguished Service Medals, 2 Silver Stars, 2 Legions of Merit, 6 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 21 Air Medals, the Purple Heart, and numerous foreign decorations. JO
    - He retired as a Major General in 1975 with 30 years service. He had about 7000 hours fighter time, 3300 of which were in the F-86. He accumulated 650 hours combat time. During his career he flew the P-4o, P-47, P-51, F-80, F-86, F-100. F-102, F-104, F-106, F-4, F-111, and the F-15.
    - Wrote an autobiography entitled "CHECK SIX, A FIGHTER PILOT LOOKS BACK."
