Fred was an airplane mechanic at Eagle Field, California in 1944. Due to poor eyesight he was not in the military but worked on military aircraft.

He had many hours in light planes and was working at the field where Amelia Earhart and "Wrong Way" Corrigan landed in Alameda, California. He gave many photos (copies) to the National Air and Space Museum archives of early aircraft.
