Fred Hungate was one of the early "Flying Farmers of America". Shortly after WW I, he wrote to the Curtiss Airplane Co. asking them to send him a "Jenny" airplane. It arrived in a huge crate at his farm located in Garfield County, in eastern Washington State. He assembled it from the blueprints that were enclosed. Upon assembling the airplane, he wrote to Curtiss Co, asking that an instructor be sent to Spokane, WA. for 6 weeks to teach him to fly the airplane.
It is reported that he was the first Flying Farmer to land his plane at Spokane, WA. After 3 or 4 years and many harrowing experiences, he sold his plane to devote full time to farming.
