    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:
    Ms. Diane R. Every

George Harned never graduated from high school. He had to work to support his family. He was able to take the opportunity to attend a vocational school and studied aviation design. After completing this course, he was hired by Grumman Aircraft in Farmington, NY in 1943. He worked throughout World War II in the tool and dye department mostly on the famous Grumman “Hellcat”. The workshifts were around the clock and he missed much family life, as he had a Secret clearance. With the development of the Space Age came designs in that category and George was a primary designer of the “LEM”, which went on to the moon. George was the first Grumman employee to earn “engineer” status without attending college3. He retired in 1974.
