George Wallace “Wally” Smith of Gordon, Pennsylvania has the distinction of having honorable discharges from the United States Army, The United States Army Air Corps, and the United States Navy. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II because it paid $5 a month more than the Army Air Corps. He served his country proudly and bravely in the final days of the Second World War as an Aviation Machinist Mate (First Class) aboard an LST in the South Pacific.
As an aviator, his proudest moment was a flawless backwards landing of a Piper J2 Cub in a fierce headwind during a tropical storm at Woodward Field in Camden, South Carolina in 1942.
But his greatest accomplishment was a long and happy life as husband of Jean Mayer Smith, father of Ellyn, Nancy, Raymond, David, and Jason; grandfather of Michael, Elizabeth, Bryan, Ryan, Carly, Cooper, Katie, Holden, and Colin; and great-grandfather of a growing list who know only his legend.
