Dr. Amelio has achieved a great number of business, scientific and technological successes. Gil has served as the CEO and chairman of Apple Computer, the president, CEO and chairman of National Semiconductor, and the president of a unit of Rockwell International.
Prior to his management career, he was a successful technologist. He is responsible for the development of the first practical charge coupled (CCD) image sensor, which is used today to register images in consumer and professional cameras and in astronomical and other equipment. The CCD is the eyeball of the Hubble Space Telescope and is used extensively at observatories around the world.
Dr. Amelio is credited with 16 patents and has also been the recipient of such awards as the Albert Einstein Award, the FIU Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the Georgia Tech Business Achievement Award, the National Management Association's Silver Knight of Management Award and the Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award.
Gil has an Air Transport Pilot rating and is typed in three different jets including the Citation family, the Astra Jet and the Falcon 2000. He has logged over 3500 hours during his 25 years in the cockpit.
