Glenn Schaumburg is retiring in August, 2008 as Director of the Aviation Department for the University of Oklahoma. During his 17 year tenure, the department has experienced unprecedented growth in both credit and non-credit programs. As director, Glenn has been responsible for the Department growing from offering one degree program in Aviation Management to four accredited aviation degree programs and four minor aviation programs. The OU Aviation Degree Program under Glenn's leadership was the first university program in the entire Southwest geographic area to receive accreditation from the official collegiate aviation accreditation group. In addition, the OU program is one of only 18 colleges, as of 2008, who were given recognition by the FAA as an approved Collegiate Training Initiative(CTI) school for the Air Traffic Control Management Degree program.
Prior to his academic career, Glenn served as an instructional designer on the development team of the C-17 transport airplane for McDonnell Douglas for four years. The C-17 courseware work of Glenn and his team, at the time, was acknowledged by the U.S. Air Force as "the standard for all courseware".
Previously, Glenn served 23 years in the USAF retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was a B-52 instructor pilot, squadron commander and Deputy Director of Training for the 15th Air Force. Military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Medal with 14 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross with two < Oak Leaf Clusters.
He holds BA and MA degrees and is a graduate of the USAF Squadron Officer's School, the Air War College and the Army's Command and General Staff College.
Early in his tenure as OU department head, he was selected to serve on the state level as a team member which developed the Oklahoma Aviation/Aerospace Education Alliance. He also was appointed a member of the Governor's Aviation Task Force. For the past three years, he has served on the national level as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the University Aviation Association.
Throughout his career and especially at OU, Glenn has regularly taught classroom courses, summer workshop sessions, and made numerous special presentations to groups of all ages. At OU he has supervised a staff of over 30 people, an FAA part 141 flight school and an aircraft maintenance department. Glenn is also active in the Daedalians, a fraternity of military pilots. He and his wife, Nancy, have 3 grown daughters, all college graduates.
