Staff Sergeant Gordon Williams was born in Maples, New York. He entered the Army Air Force during World War II. He received training as a tail gunner of a B-17 and became part of the 100th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. Just days before he was shipped out to Europe, he married Marcella Schuppenhauer in Grand Island, Nebraska.

He was stationed at Thorpe Abbots, England and took part in the famous Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission on August 17, 1943. His airplane was shot down over Germany and he was forced to parachute into enemy territory. He was captured and became a prisoner first at Stalag 7A near Munich and finally Stalag 17B in Austria. The prisoners were force-marched west along the Danube River to avoid being freed by the Russians. He was eventually freed by Patton's Army.

He now lives in retirement with his wife on Grand Island, New York after a successful career as a home contractor
