    Mr. Edwar C. Heiser

SSG Harold C. Heiser entered U. S. Army Air Force service 3 Jan. 1944 and was sent to Miami, FL for Pilot Training as an Air Cadet. After a few months training the Army "washed out" (disbanded) the cadet class due to a surplus of pilots. He was sent to Sioux Falls, SD Army Air Field and trained as a radio operator and then to Yuma, AZ Army Air Field for gunnery training. After training he was assigned to the Air Transport Command, Air/Sea rescue, South Atlantic Theatre where he flew as a radio operator in a B-17H "Dumbo" rescue aircraft. He learned to operate U. S. Navy radios and at times was TDY to the Navy where he flew in Blimps, PBY Aircraft and served in Higgins Boats (a rescue boat similar to PT boats). He was Honorably Discharged on April 1,1946. He was proud of his service and inspired a passion for aviation and space history in his family and friends.
