    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:

On 15 November 1942 in an unarmed P-47-C-1 equipped with a new radio antenna, metal control surfaces and newly developed pressure demand oxygen regulator and mask, factory installed VG recording instrumentation for research purposes by Republic Aviation Co. I reached an altitude of 49,660 ft. for less than 10 seconds with full military power of 54" and 2700 RPM with approximately 30 gal fuel remaining. The descent dive caused the velocity recorder to register a speed of 760 MPH due to air compression on the static port. Actual speed remains unknown. General H.H. Arnold wired both Republic pilots to not discuss the flight.
