It is always tough when you lose one of your own, and all of us at AIN mourn the loss of our very good friend, Harris Rothfield. "Hal" died on December 3; he was 70 years old.
Hal joined AIN as an advertising sales representative in July 1989. He did an outstanding job representing our company for 11 years-both in the U.S. and around the world-right up until his passing last month.
Hal personified aviation. He was an avid and active pilot, and over the years he owned a Piper Cub, a Cessna 182 and-his last aircraft-the V-tail Bonanza pictured here.
Hal grew up in the Northwest and learned to fly at Boeing Field. After serving in the Air Force (in a non-flying capacity), he gravitated to publishing in general, and advertising in particular. His career included a long engagement with The New York Times, where he also helped start their flight department. He later worked at Kiplinger Changing Times magazine (subsequently renamed Kiplinger Personal Business), and held that job until he joined AIN.
Hal had other diverse hobbies and interests, such as boating, for which he held a captain's license. He also enjoyed good cars, but at the end of the day his true love was aviation and airplanes.
Hal had a dry sense of humor and an ability to make people smile. He will be remembered among his friends and business associates as a sincere and honest individual—a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. Hal will be missed by all.
Hal's family has requested that any memorial donations be sent in his name to the new National Air & Space Museum annex at Dulles Airport. Checks should be made payable to the Smithsonian Institution and either mailed or delivered to the Office of Membership and Development, 1000 Jefferson Dr., SW, 4th floor, Washington, D.C. 20560-0035. Please include a letter with your donation, indicating that the gift is in Hal's name and specifically for the Dulles annex.

Wall of Honor profiles are provided by the honoree or the donor who added their name to the Wall of Honor. The Museum cannot validate all facts contained in the profiles.
