    Wall of Honor Level:
    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:

Mr. Obrecht has been fascinated with flight ever since he was three years old and his father first flew a balsa wood glider across the basement floor. He became an avid aero modeler.
Mr. Obrecht was able to re-discover for himself the history of flight by building and flying his own foot-launched tailless by plane ultra lite glider called the Easy Rider. It first flew on Thanksgiving Dan 1979 when he “ran like mad” down the ski slope at Oregon Ridge, MD got airborne, and ground skimmed to a landing even further than the Wright Brothers first flight! Later in 1990, he acquired a 1947 415 CD Ercoupe. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1991.
In 1994, after earning his glider license, he acquired a 1991 VIVAT motor glider, only one of eleven in the USA. He has spent many hours soaring in it with the engine shut down and the prop feathered. He has studied soaring birds and migration in it. After the Ercoupe found a new owner he acquired a 1946A model North American Navion in Dec. 1999 and has used it as his family “flying station wagon” since. It was first owned by Hollywood actress Claudette Colbert and was known by the North American factory pilots as the Dreamboat”. His five year old son Wolfgang first handled the controls in the copilot seat during a fall “leaf watching" flight in the mountains near Harper’s Ferry on Nov ember 2, 2003. I hope he will someday learn to fly like his Dad.
