CITATION TO ACCOMPANY THE AWARD OF THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS
    Horace R. Gonzalez, Jr.
First Lieutenant Horace R. Gonzalez, Jr. distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement with participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 21 June 1971. On that date he flew in support of a friendly unit under attack by a large hostile force. Despite marginal weather conditions and intense anti-aircraft fire directed at his unarmed aircraft, Lieutenant Gonzalez made repeated rocket marking passes to direct two sir strikes on the opposing positions. As a result of his actions, the attackers retreated with heavy casualties. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Gonzalez reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
