    Howard Grindstaff was a waist and tail gunner on a B-17 with the 568th Bomb Squadron, 390th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. He was shot down on his 19th bombing mission on March 28, 1944 over Aalen, Germany and was immediately captured. He was a prisoner of war until liberated on April 16, 1945.

    Howard was awarded three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, and three bronze campaign stars for his participation in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters during World War II.
