Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 30, 1925 to Howard & Elizabeth, Howard lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where he enjoyed exploring the Pine Barrens. At the age of 17, Howard enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a radio operator in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his discharge, he joined the Merchant Marines, leading to a lifelong love of the sea and world travel.

In 1954, Howard married Dorothy F. Agar of Gloucester City and, along with their daughter Melinda, made homes and many friends across the United States.
He was widowed in 1988 after 34 happy years of marriage to Dot. In 1991, Howard married Lotty, sharing 25 years of the love of family and friends throughout the world.

During his long career in avionics engineering, Howard shared his vast scientific knowledge with his family, and was a certified airplane and helicopter pilot. He enjoyed nothing more than guiding others to an appreciation and understanding of the wonders of nature and science, and he inspired others in his family to pursue careers in similar fields. An avid photographer and adventurer, Howard captured many extraordinary images during his travels, especially the desert where he often hiked solo.

An extraordinary man, who led an extraordinary life. Eminently qualified to be honored on the National Air and Space Museum's Wall of Honor as his lasting contributions to the field of aviation continue to bear fruit among current and future generations.
