Howard's distinguished flying career began simple enough by being drafted into the Army in 1942. Little did he know at the time that within months he'd be transfered into the Army Air Corps and be on his way towards becoming a flight instructor in San Angelo, TX. He learned the art of flying in a Fairchild PT-19, BT-13, AT-6 and then the infamous B-25. By the time of his honorable discharge in 1946 he had become proficient in flying B-25's and P-40's. He taught countless numbers of pilots during his time in TX during WWII and at discharge had reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His love of flying has continued throughout his life and he never missed a chance to take the time to watch a plane in flight.
