I received my Distinguished Flying Cross for action in Vietnam on August 7, 1967 while serving as a crew chief/door gunner on a UH-1D Huey helicopter. During a combat assault mission we came under intense enemy fire. After the first lift, mine and two other ships were the only ones capable of lifting reinforcements. Our second lift drew even heavier fire. One ship was shot down; we went to rescue the crew and were also shot down. We were evacuated and boarded another ship to make three more lifts.
