At the age of 51 years, after a demonstration in the Link Trainer, Mr. Hawthorne gained a strong desire to fulfill his dream of being a pilot. Undaunted by being blind in one eye, he requested and was granted a medical waiver. Lessons were taken in a Cessna 170. His first plane, which he owned, was a Piper Vagabond, which was replaced by a Luscombe 8E. Mr. Hawthorne, despite his physical handicap, was able to enjoy his dream and fly his planes for 19 years.
