During WW II, Lt. Mates was a B-17 pilot assigned to the 97th Bomb Group, 341st Bomb Squadron of the 15th Air Force in Italy. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for a mission over Vienna Austria in 1944. In the States, was president of the DFC Society for three years, term ending in the year 2000.
