He was 18 years old and attending Northwestern University American Airlines later hired him to be an agent in Rochester, NY. With the nation at war, American taught him to become a Flight Navigator to fly Brazil to Africa, then over the "hump" from India to China. These were military contracts and resulted in Jack's getting an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force for his services on "Project 7-A".
He continued to navigate for a number of different airlines, and in some instances to fly as a co-pilot. Many of these were 6 month contracts for the military which meant switching back and forth from one airline to the next and back again. In 1963, United Air Lines rehired him, as a Navigator for flights primarily over the Pacific.
When Navigators were replaced by electronic devices, Jack then was able to accept a position as a pilot for United at age 56. His original check out was on Douglas DC-8 equipment, and his seniority required that he fly as a Second Officer until his 60th birthday.
    retiring.
