    Honored by:
    Scott Dean

James Dean, Founding Director of the NASA Art Program, 1962--1974

Working with the National Gallery of Art he obtained the cooperation of more than 50 visual artists from 1963 to 1974 to document the early activities of NASA as the United States of America began to explore space.

The art work produced in the NASA Art Program resulted in two major exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in 1965 and 1969 and a number of U.S. tours conducted by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

The NASA Art collection was transferred to the new National Air and Space Museum in the early 1970s.

Dean became Curator of Art at the National Air and Space Museum in 1974. In 1975 he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal.

He retired from that position in 1980.
