Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross

Specialist Five James H. Buchanan, United States Army, distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam from 18 August 1968 to 21 August 1968. While serving as the Door Gunner on a UH-1H helicopter which was flying logistical and command and control support for a battalion of the 4th Infantry Division throughout an area heavily infested with North Vietnamese Army troop concentrations.

On 16 August his aircraft flew three visual reconnaissance missions exposed to withering small arms and anti-aircraft fire. Specialist Buchanan's timely and accurate suppressive fire enabled the Battalion Commander to thoroughly evaluate the tactical situation. On 19 August, during the delivery of a mortar tube to the DAK SEANG Special Forces Camp, Specialist Buchanan guided his aircraft through exploding enemy rounds to a pinpoint location over a mortar pit to drop off their cargo. This enabled the mortar crew to return fire immediately.

On 20 August, the DAK SEANG Camp was under-an enemy barrage and had suffered many wounded, two seriously. A surgeon from Fire Support Base 31 was delivered into the compound, while under heavy fire, directly saving two lives. On 21 August, Specialist Buchanan was called upon to deliver tremendous volumes of fire in order to return the Battalion Commander to his TOC location.

Specialist Buchanan's complete disregard for his own safety for four consecutive days contributed immeasurably to the success of the Free World Forces in the DAK SEANG vicinity. Specialist Buchanan's outstanding ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon him, his unit and the United States Army.
