    James A. Nichols was born in 1920 in Galion, Ohio. He learned to fly as a young man, earning his pilot's license even before he got his driver's license. He maintained a life-long interest in aviation.
    He was very active in the Quad-Cities Civil Air Patrol in Illinois in the 60's and 70's, rising to the rank of Commander.
    He retired as editorial page editor of the Moline Daily Dispatch in Moline, Illinois in 1982. He died in Moline in 1988.
