Pioneered the commercial use of the helicopter in the U.S. through his companies: Rick Helicopters, Inc. and Alaska Helicopters, Inc. Founder and first president of Helicopter Association International. Soloed 1933. Crystal Eagle award from Aero Club of Northern California, OX5 Aviation Pioneers Hall of Fame award, Helicopter Pioneer and Life Member award from HAI. Author of one aviation book and a number of aviation articles. Restored and flew a number of antique aircraft including a 1916 Spad VII and a 1944 Sikorsky R4B.
