    Honored by:
    Ms. Rebecca Hurd

Janet Harmon was in the first class of African-Americans admitted to the Curtiss Wright Aeronautical University in Chicago, Ill. She and her classmates were forced to build their own airport in Robbins, Ill. because no one in the Chicagoland area would rent them hanger space on the public use airports. At the outset of World War II Janet attempted to join the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) but was refused admission. She was also a registered nurse and attempted to join the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, but was rejected on a quota fulfillment within weeks of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
