Walter was a charter member of the Maine Air National Guard, “Maineiacs”, formed in 1947. This unit was activated during the Korean Conflict. Walter retired from the Guard in the spring of 1980. He was subsequently transferred to the Air Force Retired Reserve with an honorable discharge from the USAF. During most of his service career, Walter served as an aircraft technician and flight engineer on sundry types of airplanes. Walter has received the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He has 71 combat missions totaling 209 hours and a total of 527 hours and 55 minutes in the SWPA.
